How Credible works

Credible looks after the money in a sale between two people who found each other online — on Facebook Marketplace, Gumtree, WhatsApp, Instagram or anywhere else. The buyer's money is held safely in escrow until the deal is done: you get what you paid for, and the seller gets paid once you're happy.

There are no listings or shops: one of you creates the deal and sends the other a link.

1. Setting up the deal

Either person can create it: the item, the price, how it gets to the buyer, and how long the buyer will have to check it — 24 to 72 hours, whatever the two of you agree. Send the link to the other person and they accept it. A short code works too.

2. The buyer pays

The buyer pays the deal total by card or instant EFT, plus the payment method's own fee on top. The payment goes into escrow: safe with Credible until the deal is done. The seller can see it's really there before they send anything.

Before paying for the first time, the buyer adds their name and ID number.

3. Sending and checking

The seller sends the item within 7 days of the payment being secured and adds the tracking number. When the item arrives, the check period the deal set starts. Then:

  • Happy? The buyer accepts, and the money is released to the seller straight away.
  • No word? If the check period ends with nothing from the buyer, the money is released. The buyer gets a reminder first.
  • Something wrong? Open a dispute before the check period ends. The money stays put until it's sorted.

If nothing has been sent, the buyer can cancel 7 days after the payment was secured and be refunded.

4. The seller gets paid

Once the money is released, it is paid into the seller's verified bank account. A payout can take up to 48 hours to reach the bank after the money is released, and longer over weekends and public holidays or because of normal banking delays, which are outside our control.

5. Refunds

A buyer gets their money back when:

  • the deal is cancelled before the buyer pays — nothing is charged;
  • the deal is cancelled after payment, by both of you agreeing or by support agreeing;
  • nothing was sent and the buyer cancels after the 7 days;
  • a dispute is ruled for the buyer, or the seller takes the item back and the return is confirmed.

A refund returns what the buyer paid, less Credible's fee and the payment method's fee.

6. Disputes

A buyer who says the item isn't as described, or that it never arrived (once 5 days have passed since it was sent), opens a dispute. The seller then has 48 hours to respond: take the item back, or contest it. If the two of you can't settle it between you, support rules on it — release to the seller, refund the buyer, or a refund once the item is back. The ruling is final.

When an item goes back, either of you can book the return and whoever books it pays the courier. The buyer sends it within 10 business days; the seller has 5 days to check it when it arrives. The refund is paid when the return is confirmed.

7. Fees

  • Credible's fee: R7.50 plus 3% of the deal. Shown before the buyer pays, and kept once the payment is secured, even if the deal is refunded. A deal that ends before then costs nothing.
  • The payment method's fee. Shown at checkout and paid by the buyer on top. It isn't refunded.

During the soft launch, deals are limited to R10,000.

8. Staying safe

  • Official Credible links always come from oncredible.co.za.
  • Never pay a seller directly.
  • We will never ask for your sign-in code or password.
